New Orleans is the birthplace of Jazz. The style of music grew out of ragtime and blues and – at one point – a public New Orleanian piazza named ‘Congo Square’, a location in which the (freed) slave community of the eighteenth and nineteenth century gathered to trade, socialize, and make music.
